History of Salvador Bahia Airport

Salvador Bahia Airport was established in 1925 and was initially called Santo Amaro do Ipitanga Airport.

In 1941 Panair do Brasil, together with the support of the American and Brazilian governments, wholly rebuilt the facility.

On December 20, 1955, the airport changed its name to Dois de Julho International Airport while celebrating Bahia Independence Day.

On June 16, 1998, the airport was renamed in honor of Luis Eduardo Maron Magalhaes, an influential politician of the state of Bahia. However controversial, this second change has been attempted to revert it. Since 2017 the airport administration has been using the Trade name Salvador Bahia Airport.

A new passenger terminal was opened in 1998, replacing an outdated airport. This terminal continued to be upgraded and was completed by the end of the year 2000.

The main terminal building, which includes a shopping mall, has 11 jetways and a capacity to handle about 6,000,000 passengers annually. Air traffic at Salvador Bahia Airport has been increasing by an average of 14% per year.

Previously operated by Infraero, on March 16, 2017, the airport's concession, through a bidding process, was won by Vinci SA for R$ 2.35 billion or € 640 million. The accommodation is for 30 years. The new board administration then planned to duplicate the passenger terminal.

On April 26, 2018, the Aeroporto station along Line 2 of the Salvador subway opened for public use.
